This morning as I sat with the Lord, watching the sun rise into the vibrant blue sky, I pondered what our our first day of manual labor here at the church would look like.
Since we are currently quarantining for the next ten days, we are helping around the church by shoveling and bagging dirt to save up for the upcoming rainy season, building doors for the church door frames, and constructing flooring and walls for the upstairs portion of the church.
As I sat with God, staring at the stunning valley before my eyes, the verse came to mind about working for man with excellence, as if working for the Lord.
I, then, opened my devotional, and the verse at the top of the page was the exact verse I’d just heard and pondered:
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” -Colossians 3:23
Lord, may I be your vessel in all the work I do. May I work heartily and with all excellence—excellence that would make you proud, as I shovel dirt, measure and level boards, install flooring, plaster walls, align and install doorframes (thanks Dad), write this blog, pray with our hosts, play with their kids, and better my Spanish (also, thanks Dad).
Are you happy and diligent in your work? While you may not be working in your dream career yet, are you working willingly, fully, and sincerely in your current job? Are you respectful of your boss? Are you encouraging towards your co-workers? Are you prepping each client meeting with organization and excitement to help them? Are you cheerful and kind?
I encourage you to sit with the Lord and ask him how you can better serve your company, your boss, your clients, and your co-workers with excellence today.
Work is one of the most valuable opportunities for ministry we have available to us. Our jobs are where we spend a large chunk of our time and where we get to serve others.
May we serve the people with whom we work and for whom we work with all joy, enthusiasm, and diligence, as if we are working for Jesus.
“So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.” -1 Corinthians 15:58
Victoria, I love this verse (Colossians 3:23) and used to always start my teaching year (Tuesday Morning Prayer Group) with this verse every August at the beginning of the new school year! God is at work EVERYWHERE, no matter what job we are doing! It is our job to find God working and JOIN HIM!!
